iDevelop: Maths

Learner: Ayod
Date: 27.03.17
Learning Area: LH1
Learning Coach: Priscilla Lavakula

NZ Curriculum Achievement Objectives

Number strategies

Use simple additive strategies with whole numbers and fractions.

Number knowledge

Know forward and backward counting sequences with whole numbers to at least 1000.
Know the basic addition and subtraction facts.
Know how many ones, tens, and hundreds are in whole numbers to at least 1000.

Learning Observed:
In maths we have been learning to add and subtract tens and ones. The group are given word problems to solve with tens and ones. Ayod is able to solve these problems using our laminated template and a whiteboard marker. He can identify the numbers in the tens and the numbers in the ones columns. There is no crossing over of tens in these equations. Learners should know their basic facts to 10 to help them. Ayod worked through these problems.

Key Competencies/ Vision Principles:
Ayod was curious at first about how to work these out. He showed capability but solving these problems in his maths book. Ayod shows how he is connected by actively taking part in learning conversations and activities. He is also collaborative by working with others and sharing his learning with the group.

Next Learning Steps:
Continue practicing basic facts to 10
Continue solving word problems
Continue working on Mathletics at home

In reading Ayod's group have been learning to think from the author's point of view. They have been learning to infer and think deeper about the texts they read. The task for this group was to think whether or not the author Sean O'Connor would agree or disagree with the statements in their activity.

Key Competencies/ Vision Principles:
Ayod was able to work collaboratively with others and capable to find proof in the text and discuss with his group his answers. Ayod shows curiosity because this activity was new, he had to listen carefully and use the book to find proof. All learners had to think carefully about their answers and share them with a buddy and in our small group lesson together.

Continue reading at home and retelling the story again. Carry on with your bug club at home too.

iExperience: Ayod at Tennis

Learner: Ayod
Date: 23.02.17
Learning Area: LH1
Learning Coach: Priscilla Lavakula

Learning Observed:
This week, is our second session of tennis for the learners in habitat 1. Each session is 30 minutes with coach Marcel from AceSports on a Thursday. Tennis is a competitive sport in New Zealand that has two players. A player has to hit the tennis ball over the net back and forth to their competitor. The object of the sport is to win the set or until you reach a tie breaker. We have been learning skills like: hitting the tennis ball up and down with our hand then with our racquets and trying to balance the ball on our racquet.

Key Competencies/ Vision Principles:
Ayod enjoys and participates in all sports. He is willing to give everything a go even when he is unsure. He shows capable skills in holding the tennis racquet and is beginning to demonstrate skills in throwing and bouncing the tennis ball. Ayod listens carefully to the instructions from Marcel and collaborates with others when asked too.

Next Learning Steps:
Ayod is still learning to control the ball when balancing it on his racquet.

Keep practicing these skills for the next two weeks.
